The CCSS for ELA Instruction in Grades 6-12

My Job as a teacher will involve implementing the Common Core State Standards using the “best thinking and research on the teaching of English” (Chapter 1). Researching the most effective ways of teaching my subject will be the number one focus. Fortunately, there are enormous amounts of resources online and in the teaching community to glean from. I appreciate that the CCSS sets the general goals for students, yet as a teacher, I will be able to use my own method of instruction. Of course, I would be in alignment with the district, while collaborating with other teachers and professionals. Ultimately, this will offer lots of freedom and creativity in the classroom.

Creating a classroom that goes above and beyond, encompasses many roles: Social planner, facilitator, and co-learner. I always knew that I would continue learning in this career, however, this article points out the other many “hats” I will be required to wear. It is obvious that the number one goal in teaching is to engage students based on high expectations tied to the Common Core State Standards. According to the paragraph on Overly Specific Content Standards, “For high expectations standards implementation it is critical that teachers have the autonomy to match learning to needs, skills, prior knowledge, student interest, and changing contexts.” A big order indeed, time to get to work!

I understand how teachers can become frustrated with the high demands of delivering high quality lessons, along with the fear of scoring low on standardized tests. Some teachers might fall victim to “teaching to the test.” I think there should be more support for new teachers so that they don’t become overwhelmed. New teachers along with veteran teachers all need space to go “deep and wide” in their teaching.

As I clicked on the link for the Common Core State Standards, I focused on the Reading Standards for Literature and the Reading Standards for Informational Text. At this point in my journey, I find these CCSS’s confusing and alien. I know that these standards are out there, that they are important, and that I soon will become close and intimate with each and every one. I look forward to the time when I don’t need to look at my Common Core App to locate a certain standard, I will have already used them so much that they are memorized!
